What age is insurance cheapest?
Car insurance is the cheapest for drivers between the ages of 35 and 55. Car insurance is very expensive for teens because they have a high risk of accidents, and then it decreases sharply as drivers age into their 20s and develop more reliable driving habits.
Car insurance typically drops as you grow older, when you drive safely for three to five years following an accident or citation, and when you switch to a cheaper company. Both men and women see the steepest drop in car insurance costs between ages 18 and 19.
On average, auto insurance rates for 25 year olds are cheaper than rates for younger drivers. Auto insurance premiums tend to decrease as you get older, up until about age 75 when they start increasing again. But your age is just one of many factors insurers consider when setting rates.
Young drivers ages 16 to 24 tend to have the most expensive car insurance. Drivers in this age group are often inexperienced and are more likely to get into car accidents and file insurance claims. As a result, car insurance companies often charge higher premiums to young drivers.
Why Is Car Insurance So High for a 21-Year-Old? Compared to older drivers, 21-year-olds have less driving experience and are more likely to be involved in accidents. Car insurance companies compensate for these risk factors by charging this age group higher rates.
Vehicle Model | Average Premium 2 |
---|---|
FIAT 500 POP | £77.65 |
HYUNDAI I10 ACTIVE | £833.15 |
PEUGEOT 107 URBAN | £852.09 |
CITROEN C1 VTR | £858.04 |
Car insurance does get cheaper at 25 , but the percentage decrease varies a lot depending on the company. Of the largest auto insurance companies — Geico, State Farm, USAA and Progressive — USAA and Geico have cheaper rates for young drivers than Progressive or State Farm.
On average, 25-year-olds pay about $2,336 per year or $197 per month for full coverage car insurance policies. This is about 16% more than the national average for 35-year-old drivers, which is $2,008 per year.
Key takeaways
Rates typically start to decrease with age and accumulated driving experience, with the first notable decline usually happening at age 25, though the decrease may not be immediate and is contingent on a number of individual factors.

Which gender pays more car insurance?
In general, car insurance companies charge male drivers more for coverage because they're more likely to get into accidents. But while most states allow insurers to consider gender when setting rates, your age, location, insurance provider and driving record usually make a bigger difference.
By turning 20, you could save an average of 9% on your car insurance. That's because you've got a few more years of driving and life experience under your belt — all of which makes you a cheaper client to insure, which is good for insurance companies.
Some states don't permit gender to impact insurance rates
There are a few states that explicitly forbid insurance companies from considering gender when it comes to insurance rates. Those states are: California. Hawaii.
The top 10 cheapest car insurance companies are Nationwide, Geico, State Farm, Travelers, Progressive, AAA, Allstate, Chubb, Farmers and USAA.
The cheapest annual rates among companies in our analysis are offered by USAA, Erie, Auto-Owners, and Nationwide. These insurers have competitive sample premiums in multiple driver categories, including some categories that are typically costly to insure.
Insurance company | Average monthly full coverage premium | Annual full coverage compared to the national 21-year-old average |
---|---|---|
USAA | $226 | -$1,625 |
Erie | $235 | -$1,512 |
Auto-Owners | $239 | -$1,462 |
Travelers | $244 | -$1,409 |
Many parents generally opt to retain teens on the family's automobile insurance policy until they graduate from college, assuming they find employment and live away from home. At this point they should be paying for their own housing, food and credit card bills, building up a positive credit rating.
Ford Fiesta
Even though the Ford Fiesta was discontinued in July of 2023, the Fiesta is still a great option for 17-year-olds looking for a reliable and fun-to-drive first car. It's a great used car option – so much so that CarBuyer named the Fiesta 'Best Used Car of the Year' in 2022.
- For male 17-year-old drivers: Nationwide, $231 per month, around $2,768 per year.
- For female 17-year-old drivers: GEICO, $189 per month, around $2,263 per year.
Geico is so cheap because it sells insurance directly to consumers and offers a lot of discounts. Direct-to-consumer insurance sales eliminate the cost of middlemen and allow Geico to have significantly fewer local offices and agents than companies like State Farm and Allstate.
What is the best car insurance for someone under 25?
According to our cost research, USAA provides the cheapest young driver insurance for 21-year-olds, costing $134 per month or $1,609 per year. Geico, Auto-Owners and Erie Insurance are also affordable options for drivers.
AAA is so expensive because car insurance is expensive in general, due to rising costs for insurers. But at $529 per year, the average AAA car insurance policy is actually cheaper than coverage from most competitors. In fact, AAA is one of the cheapest car insurance companies nationally.
This is often because young men (such as 20-year-old male drivers) have significantly higher accident rates than female drivers, so they pay more for auto insurance coverage.
Insurance companies often see young drivers as a greater risk because they are more prone to accidents and poor decision-making — both of which raise the potential cost of claims that need to be paid out by insurers. As a result, these added risks lead to higher premiums when insuring teen drivers.
If you buy directly from a Progressive company, your car insurance price reflects the cost of staffing and maintaining the sales centers, and a larger portion of our marketing costs.
