How much is a $10,000 insurance policy?
On average, a $10,000 whole life insurance policy will cost about $50-$100 per month, depending on your exact age, gender, health, state of residence, and tobacco usage (if any). For example, a 50-year-old female who does not use tobacco would pay $24.31 monthly.
If you take out a $10,000 policy and name your child the sole beneficiary, when you die, they get $10,000. You can also assign multiple beneficiaries to your policy and define just how much of the policy they'll receive.
A $20,000 life insurance policy can cost as low as $15 monthly or as much as $300. The cost of final expense insurance depends on your age, policy type, gender, state of residence, tobacco habits (if any), and health conditions.
Expect to pay about $50-$250 monthly for a $25,000 whole life policy. The actual cost varies based on factors such as age and health. You won't have to take a medical exam, and some options are guaranteed acceptance, which have no health questions.
For a $5,000 life insurance policy, final expense whole life insurance is generally the only option. Final expense insurance is often called funeral or burial insurance. These small whole life policies don't require a medical exam, and most seniors qualify despite prior health issues.
How term life insurance works: The basics. A term life insurance policy is the simplest, purest form of life insurance : You pay a premium for a period of time – typically between 10 and 30 years – and if you die during that time a cash benefit is paid to your family (or anyone else you name as your beneficiary).
Cashing in or borrowing from your life insurance policy may be an option. But be sure to read over your policy contract to see if and how it works and find out if you will have to pay charges and taxes on the money. If you're not clear on your options, ask your insurance company representative for help.
Most insurance companies say a reasonable amount for life insurance is at least 10 times the amount of annual salary. If you multiply an annual salary of $50,000 by 10, for instance, you'd opt for $500,000 in coverage.
Age | Term length | Average monthly rate |
---|---|---|
40 | Term length15 years | Average monthly rate$61.33 |
40 | Term length30 years | Average monthly rate$137.89 |
50 | Term length10 years | Average monthly rate$112.67 |
50 | Term length15 years | Average monthly rate$160.51 |
Can I get a million dollar life insurance policy? If you are reasonably healthy, you will likely qualify for a million dollar policy, and if you're in your 20s, 30s, or even 40s, the cost may be lower than you think for term life coverage.
What is the cheapest life insurance you can get?
Term life insurance is the cheapest type of life insurance policy; the cost of whole life insurance can be significantly higher. With that in mind, here are some of the cheapest companies for a 20-year, $500,000 term life insurance policy covering super preferred applicants.
Minimum Life Insurance Coverage Amount
For most term life insurance companies, the smallest life insurance policy offered is for $100,000 in coverage. However, some companies, such as Genworth Life Insurance Company and AIG American General Life Insurance, offer term coverage in the amount of $50,000 or even $25,000.
- MassMutual: Best overall.
- Guardian: Best for applicants with a history of HIV.
- Northwestern Mutual: Best for consumer experience.
- New York Life: Best for high coverage amounts.
- Pacific Life: Best range of permanent life insurance.
- State Farm: Best for customer satisfaction.
If you only need coverage for a few years while your children are growing up, for example, then term life insurance may be the right choice. But if you want lifetime coverage and the ability to build cash value, then consider whole life insurance.
On one hand, the life insurance plans provide lifetime coverage, flexible premium payment terms, assured maturity benefits, flexible income payout options at a higher premium cost. On the other hand, term plan is a pure life cover which offers only death benefit at a very lost cost and affordable premium range.
While many people think “paid-up life insurance” is a type of policy they can purchase, it's actually a state or condition where your coverage is paid-in-full (fully funded) and you do not need to make any additional premium payments in order to maintain the policy.
If you're still living when the policy term ends, the insurance company pays back all or some of the money you spent on payments, depending on your policy, in the form of an ROP benefit.
Once the policy is paid-up, it's guaranteed to remain in effect for the rest of the insured's life. The life insurance company will evaluate the policy's current cash value and calculate the death benefit amount supported by that current cash value amount.
Generally, life insurance proceeds you receive as a beneficiary due to the death of the insured person, aren't includable in gross income and you don't have to report them. However, any interest you receive is taxable and you should report it as interest received. See Topic 403 for more information about interest.
Permanent life insurance policies will allow you to access the cash portion of your account while you're alive. Term life insurance, meanwhile, does not have a cash element for policyholders to access. So, if you're planning on using your life insurance as a backup cash resource you'll want to avoid term policies.
Which life insurance can you borrow from?
Life insurance loans are only available on permanent life insurance policies — such as whole life and universal life — that have a cash value component. You likely can't borrow against a term life insurance policy since it probably doesn't have cash value. Learn more about term vs. whole life insurance.
When this happens, your beneficiaries lose their inheritance from the life insurance, and you lose the opportunity to use the money again in the future. In addition, if you don't pay the loan back and the amount you borrow reaches the amount of cash value (or exceeds it), you may find yourself owing taxes.
Learn more about it. The average monthly cost of term life insurance for a 40-year-old female nonsmoker is $82.71 for $1 million in coverage, according to a March 2023 study by USNews.com. A 40-year-old male nonsmoker can expect to pay $103.21 for the same coverage.
State | Average Annual Life Insurance Premium | Average Monthly Premium |
---|---|---|
California | $668 | $56 |
Colorado | $645 | $54 |
Connecticut | $724 | $60 |
Delaware | $657 | $55 |
The average cost of life insurance is $26 a month. This is based on data provided by Quotacy for a 40-year-old buying a 20-year, $500,000 term life policy, which is the most common term length and amount sold. But life insurance rates can vary dramatically among applicants, insurers and policy types.
